Embark on a creative journey where imagination meets fabrication! In this hands-on course, students will explore the exciting world of board game design and bring their ideas to life. Combining traditional game design principles with modern digital fabrication techniques, participants will learn to conceptualize, design, and build their own fully playable board game.

During this summer academy, students will use CAD to create precise 2D and 3D models of game components, pieces, and boards. They will then use CAM software to convert those designs into machine-readable instructions. Students will receive hands-on training with a CNC router and laser cutter, allowing them to cut, mark, and shape components from a variety of materials. Along the way, they will explore how different materials influence design and function. Once all pieces are created, students will learn techniques for finishing and assembling their game boards and components into a completed project.

What Students Will Learn:

  • Fundamentals of board game design and gameplay mechanics
  • CAD modeling for 2D and 3D game components
  • How to convert designs using CAM software for digital fabrication
  • Safe operation of CNC routers and laser cutters
  • Material selection and how it impacts design and usability
  • Techniques for finishing, assembling, and presenting a completed project
