We are excited to offer 23 career exploration Summer Academies to students 6th-12th grades.
Academies are typically one day programs designed to provide a unique opportunity for students to explore a variety of careers.
We believe in giving students options to make informed decisions about their future.
Local professionals will share their expertise and career journey.
With increasing interest in our free program, we ask that participants limit their selections to 3*, and check their calendar before committing to academies.
*makergirl is an exception from the 3 program limit.
We have sufficient capacity for this special program that you can register for 3 regular programs AND STILL register for Maker Girls. You will see that makergirl will have its own separate registration.

June 12-16, 2023
This is a unique, week long program that focuses on the technology of automation. Students will make Lego robots and learn how program them. Also included is 3D printing, competitions, tours and demonstrations of other BTC programs related to engineering and a whole lot more! Students must be able to attend all 5 days.
Water and snack provided each day.
June 13, 2023
Students will be introduced to the Fire Fighters and EMS careers and what education is needed for these careers, and will practice skills related to Firefighting and EMS. Activities include Airway management, bleeding control, searching for victims, using an extinguisher, putting out a car fire and more.

Students will be introduced to computer assisted design & learn about real-world 3D printing applications. They will create their own 3D print design! Famous women in STEM will be highlighted.

Simulation Experience – BTC utilizes a state-of-the-art simulation lab with medical and public safety scenarios to replicate real pre-hospital and clinical events. This workshop will provide for multiple interactive and hands-on experiences to allow students the opportunity to learn and practice skills in a controlled environment using life size robotic patient simulators. The scope of information and practice provided to students, will range from infant to adult patient age groups and conditions. Simulations will have a realistic affect.

This Babysitting Basics course provides a foundation on which to build a babysitting business. Designed for new babysitters, this course delivers information clearly, concisely and interactively – – the perfect way for young people to learn all about the responsibilities that come with the job. Students will receive certification in First Aid and CPR/AED, and add even more value to parents and their children.

Students will have fun collaborating as they perform critical thinking to solve problems using diagnostic techniques. They will become familiar with tools and equipment that are used in the automotive industry, and will experience fun, hands-on activities. Student teams will compete to rotate tires in a specific order with each student taking a tire off and remounting the tire in a different position on the vehicle. Using a scan tool, students will retrieve an engine code from a vehicle and diagnose the code. Student will receive a tour of an Electric Vehicle build and take a ride in the high torque, tire spinning vehicle as it rolls around the track.

Learn basic culinary skills while preparing and cooking Learn skills such as: Knife skills demo, Piping demo, Ice cream making, Plating, “From scratch” condiment making.

Tale of Two Rivers: The importance of water quality
Muddy Waters STEMinist Camp will empower young women to investigate the many facets of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through the lens of water science. Over the course of this week, campers will get their feet wet to collect chemistry and freshwater macroinvertebrate data to study causes and propose solutions to water quality issues. They will also engage with local female professionals in various types of water science and learn more about what it takes to pursue these careers.
Campers will go home with confidence in their science skills, knowing more about the quality and health of the Rock River, and have a better understanding of how they can make a difference in their world. Participants must bring old shoes for use in the water, a change of clothes, a towel, and a plastic bag for wet and dirty items as we will be exploring wetlands!

Students will hear a brief history of programming that includes Python, and will explore the way it is used in IoT (Internet of Things). They will set up an environment of free interpreter software that can be used at home to further learning. They will write a simple program and then advance to more complicated scripting as time allows. Students will leave with some resources they can use to continue learning to program in Python on their own.

Jump into a world of wonder as you are guided down a path of making a flavor from scratch. Then, put it into an ice cream application. Try your hand at making a winning ice cream flavor!

Students will spend the day with professionals from the medical field. Hands-on activities will accompany each focus of healthcare including nursing, dental assisting, respiratory care, laboratory testing and imaging.

Students will learn about the variety of careers needed to successfully experience a SkyCarp baseball game. The day will be spent at the ABC Supply Stadium visiting with professionals from the different departments such as marketing, broadcasting, field/equipment maintenance, sports medicine along with a visit from Poopsie.

Introduction to Metal Fabrication and Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) For students participating for the first time, there will be an Introduction to Metal Fabrication and Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) and including Safety brief, Design, fabricate. For those who have participated in the past, you will get the above and a chance to work on a level 2 project.
July 12-13, 2023
Students enrolled in the Construction Academy will spend their time learning about measurement, machine and tool safety, and building techniques used in construction. Students will learn how to properly use hand and power tools, techniques for assembling construction materials, and will put this knowledge to use constructing a project that will be donated to a local organization. They will also be given a tour of an actual construction work site.

Students will have the opportunity to walk to several Geronimo Hospitality serviced locations in our downtown area. They will learn about hotel management, work with a chef creating their own lunch, practice golfing skills, discover the science behind a great cup of coffee along with learning about the variety of career paths in the world of hospitality.

The activities will be designed to show students a more in-depth view of what skills are needed to be a law enforcement officers. While many people see officers driving squad cars and performing other tactical skills, it is the critical thinking, decision making, observation skills, and creative problem solving that are the skills most often used by modern day law enforcement officers.

The CAD/3D printing summer academy will be an introduction to a 3D CAD program. Students will learn how to operate the program, create a 3D model, and prepare the model for 3D Printing. Students enrolled in this summer academy will also learn a 3D printing Slicer Program to create gcode and 3D print their designs. Upon completion of this summer academy, students will be eligible to take an exam on 3D printing and upon passing the exam will receive a 3D Printing Certification.

Students enrolled in the Arduino Summer Academy will be introduced to Coding and Electronics using an Arduino Controller. Students will learn how to create a circuit, program and play a melody, and control an LED light to make it blink, flow, flash, and muliticolored. This is meant to be an introduction into coding, electronics, and arduino systems.

Students will get to explore different areas that the HVAC/R industry has to offer through a variety of hands-on activities: Soldering, brazing, annealing, bending copper, fabricating ductwork, gas piping a furnace. Students will testing the operation of a residential HVAC System and recover/evacuate and charge a residential AC system. Students participating for the first time will get to explore different areas that the HVAC/R industry has to offer through a variety of hands-on activities. Those who have participated in the past will get the above and a chance to work on a level 2 project.

Students will participate in hands-on activities as they relate to a variety of careers in construction. Professionals in masonry, glass glazing, HVAC, electrical and carpentry will share their craft while working alongside the students.
