4 Week, Hands-On After School Program

Students enrolled in February’s Innovation After School Program will learn all about careers in Environmental Engineering.

Week 1 Wind Lab – How do wind turbines capture the power of the wind and turn it into electricity? Students will become mechanical engineers as they learn about voltage and build their own wind-powered generator!

Week 2 Chocolate Chip Mining – Geologists and mining engineers look for valuable resources like cooper and lithium to help power our electric devices. Students will use a sweet substrate to simulate a mining site and learn what goes into selecting and cleaning up a mine.

Week 3 Animal Bridges – Roads, cities, and farms can break up animal habitats-a problem called habitat fragmentation. Students will become ecologists and structural engineers as they design and build their own wildlife corridor, creating safe paths for animals to migrate and find food, water, and shelter.

Week 4 Regulating Runoff (WELTY CENTER) – When it rains, the ground can only hold so much water before it floods. As cities grow, urban planners team up with civil engineers to minimize flooding when they build newparks and neighborhoods. Students will test different materials in a rainstorm to gauge which is the best retainer.
