4 Week, Hands-On After School Program

Welty Environmental Center logoStudents enrolled in the September after school program will learn about careers in Environmental Science with the help from our partners at the Welty Environmental Center. Students will focus on a different career pathway each week while investigating the following: Levee or Not Levee, DIY Land Use Model, Playing with Power, Water We Going to Do?

  • With time, size, and budget in mind, students will work in teams to design and
build a levee that will (hopefully) protect their city. They will become true
    environmental engineers.
  • Students will explore the different surface temperatures and water movements of land cover types (grass, pavement, etc.), then use that knowledge to build their own model to teach others.
  • By playing the role of a chemical engineer, we will measure the power of a fermentation fuel cell using a multimeter. Students will ready solutions, build the cell, and ultimately measure the power they can produce.
  • Working as hydroelectric engineers, students will harness the energy of water by building their own water wheels. In this friendly competition, students will work to produce the most rotations per minute (RPM) from water falling on their wheels.

Sep 5: Levee or Not Levee
Sep 12: DIY Land Use Model
Sep 19: Playing with Power
Sep 26: Water We Going to Do?

Students signing up for this program are expected to be at all Thursday meetings from 4:00-5:00 pm.

  • Dates: Four Thursdays: 9/5,  9/12, 9/19, 9/26
